No trainer has a better record in the Irish 2000 Guineas than the great Aidan O’Brien. He holds the record with 12 wins since Desert King scored in 1997. British raider Rosallion came out on top in 2024 and O’Brien will be keen to assert his dominance with another success. He has four potential runners in Saturday’s Classic at the Curragh and a progressive and lightly raced colt appears to be the most interesting. Officer is bred to win the race and he has made a very promising start to his career. His sire Dubawi won this very race in 2005 and his dam Hydrangea won the Matron Stakes in her racing days. You could hardly ask for a better pedigree and he should have a big future with that in mind.
Making his debut at the Curragh in August, he overcame a slow start and probably had more in hand than the official winning margin suggests. The form has worked out particularly well also, with the next four horses home all winning since.
It’s a shame that we didn’t see him again at two but he wasn’t beaten far when third in a Listed contest at the Curragh on seasonal debut. He was up against older horses that day and was clearly in need of the run, as it was his first start for 217 days.
O’Brien’s colt returned to winning ways when upped to a mile earlier this month and there should be plenty more to come from this thoroughly unexposed sort. Field Of Gold and Cosmic Year should provide some stiff competition but you simply cannot ignore the O’Brien factor.
