Andrew Balding has had plenty of winners in the last couple of weeks and a whopping 77 per cent of his horses have run to form in this period. The Hampshire-based handler is set to send two runners on the 780-mile round trip from his yard to Hamilton up in Scotland on Wednesday. With four winners from 13 runners there in the last five seasons, a strike-rate of 31 per cent isn’t to be sniffed at. Sugar Road remains very lightly raced and he began the season by finishing second in a Southwell novice back in February. He then made his handicap debut at Kempton and could only manage ninth, which resulted in a 2lb drop in the weights.
Another disappointing effort followed in Class 3 company at Epsom but the handicapper has responded with a substantial 3lb drop since. The drop back in grade is likely to be a big help and it’s only a matter of time until the four-year-old falls to a competitive mark.
Hi Ya Mal didn’t show a great deal in three starts last term but it was a much improved display when second on handicap debut at Kempton in February. A 3lb rise was perhaps a little harsh on that evidence but there should be plenty of scope for further progress.
Too keen when fourth at Southwell next time, he’ll need to learn to settle better, especially here at Hamilton with the stiff uphill finish. That being said, it’s unlikely that we’ve seen the best of him yet and he’ll be winning races when the penny drops.
