‘He’s a Grade 1 horse in a handicap’ – Patrick Mullins gives his Galway Hurdle tip

One of the main events of the meeting is the Galway Hurdle and the Willie Mullins team is always dangerous. There are few that know the operation better than Patrick Mullins and he recently gave a huge vote of confidence to one contender in particular. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing and take a look at our ante-post selections for both the Galway Plate and the Galway Hurdle.

Galway Hurdle

Daddy Long Legs is the horse in question and Patrick Mullins believes he should be competing at a higher level than this. He was an easy winner of a seemingly competitive handicap at the Punchestown Festival and is set to take his chance off a mark of 150 here. Mullins seems very confident ahead of the big race.

He said: “If he came back to his best, for me, he’s the possible Grade 1 horse in a handicap. You can put a line through his last run and he could be the Aramon, Saldier or the Sharjah that runs at Grade 1 or Grade 2 level. For me he’s probably our number one chance.”

You will need to forgive a very below-par effort in a Grade 3 at Tipperary earlier this month but Mullins is unconcerned and going right-handed could also help here.

The amateur rider added: “Daddy Long Legs would probably have been the number one hope going through the summer. Obviously he disappointed at Tipperary last time and there’s no real obvious reason for that, although it’s possible he didn’t handle the well-watered ground. All of his wins have been right-handed and his couple of bad runs have been left-handed.”
