Joseph O’Brien sends one runner on the 804-mile round trip to Goodwood

Irish trainer Joseph O’Brien has had 11 previous runners at Goodwood and most of them would have been at the big summer festival. It’s not too often that he sends runners to the Sussex track for smaller meetings so his one runner there on Friday has to go in the notebook. Top jockey William Buick has been booked for the ride so you would imagine the horse in question isn’t here for a day out. 3.15 Goodwood

Beset started her career with Henry Candy and although it took a few bites of the cherry before the penny dropped, the switch to handicaps was a big help. She took a big step forward to finish second on handicap debut at Lingfield in September and there were plenty of positives to take.

The daughter of Expert Eye went one better at Lingfield next time and she was up with the pace in the early stages of the race. Joe Leavy made his move just before the two furlong pole and the filly responded well, eventually going on to score by a length-and-a-quarter.

Making her debut for Joseph O’Brien at Sligo earlier this month, she had to overcome significant trouble in-running to come out on top and managed to do so. It was an excellent performance under the circumstances and this lightly raced filly has scope for further improvement.

It’s particularly interesting that William Buick has been booked for the ride we can expect a big run with that in mind. Santorini Star and Bas Bleu are fellow last time out winners and they are likely to be the biggest threats to the Irish raider’s chances.
