The cost of simply getting a horse to the races these day is pretty expensive and fuel is one of the more pricey outgoings. With that in mind, trainers can be forgiven for sticking to their local tracks. That’s not the case at Sedgefield on Tuesday however, as Wales-based trainer Mickey Bowen is set to send one runner on the 651-mile round trip. Here we take a close look at the horse’s chances and consider the main dangers. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Gavin carries a 7lb penalty here, as a result of his very comfortable success at Ffos Las last week. Bowen’s gelding made all the running that day and pulled clear to score by almost 10 lengths. An extra 7lb probably wouldn’t have stopped him that day and he should go close if in similar form here.
Trailblazer could be the main danger, as he’s currently rated 6lb higher than when bolting up over course and distance on his penultimate start. All five of Gavin’s wins have come on good ground and the seven-year-old has won off higher marks in the past, which bodes well for another big run.
It certainly helps that the yard has been in fine recent form and is operating at a strike-rate of 33 per cent. Four winners from 12 runners certainly isn’t to be sniffed at and that is certainly a positive omen.
