Sir Mark Prescott hasn’t sent runners to Ayr with much frequency in recent years and it’s easy to see why. It’s a 746-mile round trip from his Newmarket base up to the Scottish track and travel expenses would be significant. He’s had just the one runner there so far in 2024 but that number is set to double on Monday. The runner in question is therefore worth keeping an eye on as connections will not want to come home empty-handed. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Sea King is already a winner this season, having made a successful start to the campaign at Ripon in April, and there could be more to come. He had to wait for a gap to appear that day and showed a good attitude to come out on top by half-a-length. That victory came off a 2lb lower mark and his current rating shouldn’t be beyond him.
Prescott’s five-year-old looked a little outclassed when struggling in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot. The handicapper has since dropped him 1lb in the weights and it should be noted that he didn’t get the smoothest of passages that day either. This race certainly look easier and the drop in grade should be a massive help to him.
His trainer has had just seven runners at Ayr in the last five seasons and six of those have finished in the first three. Those runners have yielded two winners, which gives him a very healthy strike-rate of 29 per cent, and you certainly can’t rule out the possibility of Sea King boosting that further here.
