What a day it was for the British at the Curragh on Saturday with three big winners on the boards! James’s Delight won the Greenland Stakes at 22/1 for Clive Cox, before Field Of Gold (Evs) blew the field apart for Team Gosden in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Skukuza (9/2) then won the following handicap for Ed Dunlop. Let’s take a look at the best British chances on Irish 1,000 Guineas day on Sunday below!
There’s a few British raiders in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup but Kalpana seems to be the best hope for the Brits, at least on paper. Andrew Balding’s quality filly won five times last year, rounding off the campaign with a top-class performance in the Fillies’ & Mares’ Stakes at Ascot on soft in October. The rain that has fallen will aid her cause and with the yard in good form, she could prove tough to crack if she’s ready to roll on her return to action.
Ollie Sangster runs two with solid each-way chances in the Irish 1,000 Guineas but the fact Oisin Murphy is booked to ride Flight, that might be the Brit’s best hope in the contest. She won her maiden at Sandown easily last year and returned with a terrific second to Desert Flower in 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket when last seen, only headed in the closing stages. She’s a very strong traveller and this fair galloping track should play to her strengths. It would be rude not to mention stablemate Simmering who finished third in that Newmarket contest and will have the services of Dylan Browne McMonagle. It should be a great race.
