Sha Tin racecourse is the premier racecourse in Hong Kong and one of two racecourses managed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the other being Happy Valley. Sha Tin is home of the world-famous Longines International Race Weekend and regularly hosts top-flight flat racing action in Hong Kong. Located about 20 minutes from the centre of Hong Kong, Sha Tin hosts all of the weekend action, with Happy Valley often abuzz midweek for evening fixtures.

Sha Tin Tips

Sha Tin has two tracks, with both turf and all-weather action throughout the year. Sha Tin’s tracks are both right-handed with the main turf track measuring at just under 2000m and the all-weather course inside the turf course measuring around 1600m

The turf course is 2000m round but also has two starting chutes, one adjoining the 430m home straight, making it a straight course of 1000m for sprints and the other joining the back straight for starts for races run over 1600m & 1800m.

The All-weather course is one mile round, so is fairly sharp, with races run over distances from 1200m or six furlongs, up to 2400m, one mile and four furlongs

Sha Tin is a sight to behold with its waterside location set with hillside backdrops and even its own public park in the centre of the racecourse.

The grandstand itself can hold a capacity of up to 85,000, a figure only surpassed by Epsom Downs in the UK, and even has its own onsite training facilities and equine hospital.

From the big Group-1 cards such as the Longines International Race Weekend to the weekly cards full of competitive handicaps, our expert tipsters at myracing will study the stats, from and all the latest news to bring you the best Sha Tin tips.

Sha Tin Top Trainers & Jockeys

Sha Tin Top Trainers

There is no other place to start when looking at trainers at Sha Tin than legendary trainer John Moore. Moore who is now in his last season due to the Hong Kong Jockey club’s decision to not renew his licence as he approaches 70-years-old.

Moore is Hong Kong’s longest-serving and winning-most trainer, saddling over 1700 winners in his career.

Moore’s biggest rival in recent years has come by way of John Size who was a top trainer in Sydney prior to the switch to Hong Kong almost two-decades ago.

Since then John Size has been at the forefront of Hong Kong racing and is the current and 11-time Champion Trainer.

Aside from Hong Kong’s big two, one trainer to keep on side would be Frankie Lor who served as an assistant trainer for both John Moore and John Size.

Lor is into his second season as a trainer and is operating at a strike-rate of around 14% which is among the best at Sha Tin.

Sha Tin Top Jockeys

The locally nicknamed ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira is Sha Tin’s most successful jockey.

Moreira operates at a strike-rate of around 25% at Sha Tin and is regularly found pairing with the top horses in all of Sha Tin’s best races.

Despite being the most successful jockey at Sha Tin, Joao Moreira has been touched off in the last two seasons by Zac Purton, for the title of Champion Jockey.

Purton himself has operated at a strike-rate of around 21% in the last 5-seasons and like Moreira is a popular booking for many of Hong Kong’s top horses.

Moreira and Purton are very much the jockeys to follow in Hong Kong both at Sha Tin and Happy Valley and typically ride double the amount of winners as their counterparts in a season.

With the prize money on offer and including the international races towards the end of the year, you can often find some jockeys from the UK riding over the winter in Hong Kong.

Notably, Silvestre De Sousa who has had great success in his foray’s to Hong Kong, riding 25 winners at Sha Tin in 2019.
