Cheltenham Festival Tips – Day 4
The final day of the week but the big one headlined by the Blue Riband of the National Hunt season, the Cheltenham Gold Cup which will be the centrepiece of the Cheltenham Festival day 4.
Juvenile hurdlers kick off the day in the Triumph Hurdle, a race which saw Rachael Blackmore ride the final of her six winners at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival, enough to seal her place as the leading rider of the meeting and become the first woman to ever do so. Last season again saw the Closutton maestro, Willie Mullins, kick off his day with a winner in the shape of the well backed Vauban. It’ll come as no surprise to horse racing fans if he again holds all of the aces in this contest again after saddling his third win in the last four with Lossiemouth in 2023.
The young hurdlers stay in the limelight with the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle third up on the card following the County Hurdle, a race where it could pay to follow either Dan Skelton or Willie Mullins who have both trained four each in the race since 2015.
Recognised as the most prestigious jumps race in the calendar, the Cheltenham Gold Cup is the second most valuable race in the UK, behind only the Aintree Grand National, with a huge cash prize of £625,00 available for the 2023 renewal. Galopin Des Champs lived up to the massive hype surrounding him leading up to the last renewal to seal Willie Mullins’ third victory in the race, all of which of have come since 2019. All being well, we’ll get to see him take his chance to become only the third horse in over 50 years to retain his crown.
The Foxhunters is always one of the biggest betting heats of the entire year, classed as the amateur’s Gold Cup, run over the same distance and twenty-two fences as the big race. The Mares’ Chase and the Martin Pipe round out the week, the former still in its infancy with this being only the second ever renewal and the latter one of most difficult handicaps of the week.
Our Friday Cheltenham tips will cover all these races in fantastic detail, so make sure to check out this page regularly for our latest predictions. If you’re looking for tips for other days please check back to the Cheltenham Festival homepage.
