Tips for Downpatrick Races

Just a mile away from the town with the same name, Downpatrick is situated in County Down with the first race meeting taking place in 1685. One of two racecourses in Northern Ireland, it stages National Hunt racing from March through to November.

Course: It is a narrow, right-handed track with a circuit of 11 furlongs. Given the many undulations and tight turns, we try and steer clear of big, long striding horses for our tips.

Feature Race: The main race at Downpatrick we’ll have tips for is the Ulster National, which is a handicap chase run over 3 miles 4 furlongs. In 2018 this was the race that gave Gordon Elliott the record of winners in an Irish Jump season of 194.
