Thirsk Flat Course

Tips for Thirsk Races

Located in North Yorkshire, Thirsk hosts flat race days from April through to September and is a track used regularly by the Northern trainers. It’s a trek for the Southern stables so it’s always important to note when those handlers send runners, particularly if there is a significant jockey booking, so we look out for this with our tips.

Course: The round course is a 1 mile 2 furlong left-handed oval which is very flat and sharp with a 4 furlong straight. There is also a 6 furlong straight chute for shorter races which is slightly more undulating and there is a slight camber towards the middle of the track at the end of the course, it can slow those on the inside down slightly.

Draw Bias: On the straight track over 5 and 6 furlongs, you really want to be drawn in the middle to high numbers as those stalls are definitely favoured which we take into account for our tips.

On the round course (races over 7 furlongs and further) it is favourable to be drawn low as there seems to be an advantage being close to the inside rail.

Feature Race: The major race of the year is the Thirsk Hunt Cup. Often targeted by the big Northern trainers, the race is run over a mile and the best recent winner was the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Farhh in 2012, who went on to win the Lockinge and Champion Stakes.
